the solution here is having planners add flexibility to zoning so you can build the thinner buildings but taller and capture 100% FAR either way. i bet most would be willing to do PAB if they weren’t losing area. again, planners are getting the outcomes they created

two schemes. same number of bedrooms. scheme on left: 80' deep floor plates, double loaded corridors. almost exclusively studio bedrooms. 33% open space. point access blocks on right: 55% 3BR, 11% 2BR. 44% studio. 50% open space. most dual/corner aspect. PAB uses 70% FAR of double loaded corridor

when planning didnt want any more of these they changed their designation and zoned them out of the city. so much of our housing problems are done with invisible lines

Interesting how they didn't really make an official distinction between a 1-family house used as a 1-family house and a 1-family house used as an SRO in the old tax records--1938 & 1974 records below. In essence, separating the typology from the use, and focusing on the typology.
