As with words like "terrorism" and "fascism," I suggest you all hold the word "genocide" in reserve for the day you might want to use it and have it stick. The fact that there is virtually no traction for the term outside of social media and campuses should be a caution. As with words like "terrorism" and "fascism," I suggest you all hold the word "genocide" in reserve for the day you might want to use it and have it stick. Kinda weird that some holocaust and genocide experts donā€™t seem to share your tone policing concerns

Translation: only use these terms when the political elite gives you permission to do so (Ie. When those other people perpetrate them)

Iā€™d suggest doing a Google search to see all the other places it has gained traction.

Sorry Tom, I'm gonna call it how I see it and I'm for sure not going to pretend I don't see it that way or wait for polite society to catch up

War crimes? Yes. Genocide? No.

Yours here is an important argument - holding ā€œgenocideā€ in reserve - and one Iā€™d like to read more about. Social media narratives around genocide do run the gamut; one discounts even a Srebrenica. The US Holocaust Memorial Museum commemorates Srebrenica as a genocide, but what do they know.

What is the amount of people from an ethnic group or culture youā€™re allowed to kill before we can start calling it genocide ?

Biden sure was quick to call Putins attack on Ukraine a genocide yet shockingly slow to call Israel's conduct in Palestine the same. I could be wrong but Israel's counterattack and subsequent prosecution of the war seems much closer to the definition.

I think a lot of people would prefer not to wait until an entire culture is exterminated before stroking their greybeard thoughtfully and deciding that hmm, maybe genocide was the right word after all
