I would need VERY hard evidence before I'd believe there are Trump supporters who didn't also buy into "tough on crime" - right up until it interfered with the way they want to vote. This lattice of justifications to overwrite cognitive dissonance is the mechanism behind Overton windows shifts.
I agree with several commenters here that being white is necessary for being excused for a felony, but I think it is not sufficient. Media would not be taking this tack if Bernie or Hillary were convicted of multiple felonies. I think Trump being a white bully is the key.
