I'm a professional suspicious bastard and I've nearly gotten caught by a few, and Cory Doctorow (a literal expert on this) got hit earlier this year: doctorow.medium.com/how-i-got-sc... It's a trillion dollar a year industry and the operators are extremely sophisticated.

All they need to do is catch you at a distracted moment and get the holes in the Swiss cheese to line up for just that critical instant. (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_c...) No one is scam-proof; it's why we can't get rid of scammers.
