It was homemade tortilla day! 22-ish flour tortillas (now there are 20) made on a cast iron comal. They are 1/2 whole wheat.
Those of you who grew up tearing pieces off of loaves of San Francisco Sourdough to gobble with cheese and wash down with cheap wine might recognize loaves like these. Almost two pounds each and about 9ā across. The hotbox did āgoodā this morning.
The smaller, round loaf was cut into with for a dinner of faux-nicoise salad. Itās not quite the right balance of flours for the mystery sandwich loaf but it is close.
The hotbox was busy this morning. Three medium (1lb) loaves from a batch of dough usually baked off as two large loaves. Iām trying to recreate a batch that made really good whole grain sandwich bread. The round loaf is destined to go with soup for dinner.
Laurie got us some lovely new cushions and a sky blue umbrella to replace the old, faded āearthā-toned one. It actually feels cooler under a blue umbrella.
Well, CZ (if I may call you that), I agree about the fights between oven and AC but for me the problem is really the unpredictability of my starter in the summer. Dough that behaves well in the cool part of the year fails miserably in the heat of summer, here.
Summer (and it IS Summer here, now) is one of the worst times to bake bread. These two hi-fibre, seeded loaves just came out of the oven. Iām getting used to making them and Laurie really appreciates them. These (and others) will help get us through the kitchen overhaul.
Iāve been meaning to get and post a picture of this all week: our pink hollyhocks have started blooming in earnest and they harmonize with the sunset tonight.
