“...I have to withdraw as your commencement speaker. I give all my best wishes and congratulations to the class of '24 and pray for the safety of the Palestinian people, the return of the hostages, and an end to this terrible war.” 2/2

I sent this message to the UMass administration yesterday: "I was looking forward to speaking next week at UMass Amherst. I visited two years ago and everyone was awesome. My nephew graduated from there and got a great education. But calling the cops on peaceful protesters is a shameful act...” 1/2

Man. I have pretty mixed feelings about leaving academia, but stuff like this reminds me that no, mostly what I miss is teaching and library privileges.

One reason peer review is breaking is that it’s so much intensive labor, requires a lot of expertise, and is essentially uncompensated. I worry that a book with this degree of problems is what happens when peer reviewers just don’t do their job bc pressed for time, etc.

As a heritage speaker/learner, I just learn characters to connect with what I already know aurally. When I see pinyin I just ignore the tones/accents, since I can usually just read it to myself and the flow of the sentence will give me the right tones and meanings from heritage speaking fluency.
