Man. I have pretty mixed feelings about leaving academia, but stuff like this reminds me that no, mostly what I miss is teaching and library privileges.
One reason peer review is breaking is that it’s so much intensive labor, requires a lot of expertise, and is essentially uncompensated. I worry that a book with this degree of problems is what happens when peer reviewers just don’t do their job bc pressed for time, etc.
As a heritage speaker/learner, I just learn characters to connect with what I already know aurally. When I see pinyin I just ignore the tones/accents, since I can usually just read it to myself and the flow of the sentence will give me the right tones and meanings from heritage speaking fluency.
