Fears of "machine take-over" raise reasonable skepticism. Here is why corporations can use machines to gradually automate our work more economically efficiently:

Machines can do more economically efficient work because they lack our human constraints. Human bodies are messy. Our soft organic "wetware" undergoes spontaneous chemical reactions at room temperature. In contrast, artificial "hardware" is produced from hard molecular substrates (eg. the silicon found in rocks).
The property of being chemically inert while operating allows hardware components to be standardized. By molecules not splitting off nor moving about nor rebonding like molecules in human bodies do, the configurations stay stable and compartmentalized. Electrons moving across these standardized configurations process information much faster.
Standardization allows for virtualisation. Hardware produced in different places and times still store data (longer than brains can remember), compute code (faster than neurotransmitters), and communicate (higher-bandwidth than vocal chords) in the same way.
While human skulls do hold brains that are much more energy-efficient at processi

I would like to wake up tomorrow to find that all the prevailing directions and highest likelihood potentialities of sociopolitical power were geared toward compassion and community instead of individualized greed and power-over. Sure would be nice.

The makers of AI chatbots ChatGPT and Claude pledged to send voter questions to trusted sources, CanIVote.orgTurboVote.org, respectively. But in our tests, neither ChatGPT 3.5 nor Claude 3 Sonnet ever referred to those websites in responses to voter queries. Our latest:

Leading AI Companies OpenAI and Anthropic Are Not Keeping Their Election Promises

AI companies have made pledges in recent months to limit the potential for election misinformation on their platforms. Those promises are proving hard to keep. OpenAI, which created the ChatGPT model...
