When I was VERY young (under 5), my grandma Elsa explained to me that her sister went away to school. She struggled to articulate what she meant to convey. But in retrospect, either relatives went & got her back, or it was maybe more like a day school & they followed & retrieved her one day.
I distinctly remember her saying, "But she came home. We were lucky." & I distinctly remember I did not at all understand what she meant. Not even a little bit. I realize now that she couldn't find any ways to say more or be more clear.
My grandma, who's younger... & I don't know if she went to the same kind of school.
The elementary school exists in my town because my tribe heard about what went on at the boarding schools My family gave up a chunk of our allotment for the school and told the feds that was it. If we heard the words boarding school the war was back on Some rezzes did wind up with day schools
