If you have a Fidelity Cash Management account, all ATM fees are refunded, including international ones! I got local currency this way when I was in Taiwan years ago. I don't remember the exact details, but I recall being pleasantly surprised at the time bc the exchange rate was very reasonable too!
I use both. I love X & get a ton of value from it for philosophy, book excerpts, news, & memes. And I just got back on bsky & am finding the liberal perspective here interesting, stuff I don't get at all in my X feed. I also love how easy it is to programatically post via ATProto. Room for everyone!
TY for sharing. John-- just FYI: I'm unable to view the vid you shared, but I think I get the gist. W/ Waymo, I think the hope is that yes: even tho there are lots more robo-taxis, the idea is that there'll be much fewer privately owned cars. eg if I could robo-taxi everywhere,I wouldn't own a car.
Well, I just excerpted that fr the Vox article. If "US freight rail" is also a myth, that's on Matthew Yglesias & Vox for spreading non-truths. I'm honestly trying to learn more here. I think the pt you made is the best counter I've heard to "density". ie. rail happens 1st & *then* density follows.
I'd rather ppl find my posts and see that density is not the main answer. If we can't discuss openly on social media, then ppl will never learn. Also, if we never update our mental models on new info, then we'll never grow. Anyway, TY for your comment. I appreciate learning something new today.
Well, you certainly don't need to believe anything I say. That's your prerogative. I've heard the "density" line for years now & had just taken it as a fast (bc it does make sense on a surface level). I appreciated learning something new this morning; I think that's the idea of social media.
TY for sharing! Yes, I was not trolling. I was def being sincere. I live in Cincinnati which *almost* got a subway system ~100 years ago. Sadly, it didn't happen. This AM, I just dug into this & learned more. I still like the idea of Waymos tho: achieving the same aim w/o individual car ownership.
Ok, looking this up, TIL: density *isn't* the main reason we don't have good public transit (at least in the form of trains). According to www.vox.com/2015/6/12/87..., the reasons are: 1) No incentive to build passenger rail; 2) Our existing US freight rail is so good; 3) Astronomical cost. TY; TIL!
Vox is a general interest news site for the 21st century. Its mission: to help everyone understand our complicated world, so that we can all help shape it. In text, video and audio, our reporters expl...
The US only has density in our biggest cities (NYC, Chicago, SF). There, subway stations make sense. But everywhere else that is more rural, cars must be the answer. Also, our largest cities are very far apart too which makes HSR lines difficult. I know CA has been trying but has encountered issues.
This is interesting. Do you have a few examples that come to find? Am genuinely curious. What are some historical examples of liberal organizations that started w/ liberal intents but then over time, ended up breeding fascism? Am keen to learn more ab the history of this.
