Ok, looking this up, TIL: density *isn't* the main reason we don't have good public transit (at least in the form of trains). According to www.vox.com/2015/6/12/87..., the reasons are: 1) No incentive to build passenger rail; 2) Our existing US freight rail is so good; 3) Astronomical cost. TY; TIL!
