If you think all comedy / music / movies are rubbish compared to the ones you grew up with , it is your failure to keep up, not the failure of culture
Absolutely correct. And shitting on the young is reprehensible, lazy, and weak.
That’s true, although some of the really popular stuff is genuinely mince. It was the same when I was younger. I honestly don’t understand how cookie-cutter stuff is so popular. Max Martin is some kind of warlock.
Or just a matter of personal taste.
Part of why new things aren't so good is: I've seen that pattern before. Just gets harder to find stuff that's novel and good (I suspect this is particularly true of comedy & some music). Maybe, at least. Your point holds too though.
I had the time when I was young to listen/watch a 1000 bits of comedy, music & movies per unit of time. Only 10% were great, but I remember them. Now I only have time for 10 bits of comedy, music & films so it seems like there's longer gaps between the good stuff. It's the same hit rate though.
Music peaked with D:Ream though. You have to admit that.
I say this as a mainly computer based musician, but finding & watching a live band, that plays real instruments & doesn't just do cover versions is a particular joy of mine
Or maybe it’s that removing the dole as indirect arts subsidy and raising the barriers to participation in the arts for working-class kids has actually… had an effect?
Pop stars are also more likely to have gone to private school than university vice-chancellors.
Ag! I immediately agreed with you but then thought about it. I grew up with your comedy and that is obviously the best! I don't think current culture is rubbish but my preference seems to be from the past - not necessarily from my youth. One of my fav. films is Arsenic and Old Lace from the 40s.
