Did some LabVIEW work last month for the first time in years. LabVIEW coding always reminds me of being ~7 and playing Rocky's Boots, an educational game about logic gates that was still somehow really fun, on our ancient PC. God bless the Internet Archive, where it's playable online in an emulator:

Rocky's Boots is an educational logic puzzle game by Warren Robinett and Leslie Grimm, published by The Learning Company in 1982. It was released for the Apple...

Sorry I've been even quieter than usual the last week or so--I'll be joining the Airborne Lunar Spectral Irradiance (air-LUSI) team for their campaign of flights this December and I'm currently busy at the National Institute of Standards and Technology helping them get ready!

Alt: Garrus Vakarian from Mass Effect, with the text "Can it wait for a bit? I'm in the middle of some calibrations."

America is ready for a senior NCO VP. ‘Let me caveat off the ma’am. You best be green on MEDPROs, State Department, or I’ll have every first line leader in my office at parade rest on Friday afternoon, hooah?’

The 2nd paper from my NPP postdoc is now available (open access) in GRL! HiRISE imaged a layered, steep-sided ridge in the glacial deposits near the Pavonis Mons volcano on Mars; we argue that it formed from volcano-ice (and volcano-water) interaction. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...

Figure 1 from the paper. Inset a: a map showing the distribution of glacial deposits, including the ridge we studied, next to Pavonis Mons. Inset b: a map showing where Pavonis Mons is on Mars. Main image: the population of ridges including the one we studied.
Figure 2 from the paper, showing the ridge and a neighboring ridge in detail.
Figure 3 from the paper, showing a 3-d rendering of the ridge and comparing it to three similar ridges in Iceland.
Figure 4 from the paper: a sketch showing the sequence of events by which we argue the ridge formed.

This is an enormous scandal and reason for all academics to withhold labor from Taylor and Francis/Routledge

Just found out that Taylor & Francis has sold access to all @routledgebooks data to Microsoft to train their AI. This includes my publications. I get no payment for using my research labour, never mind the bigger problems of this energy-intensive extractivism...

In celebration of pride month, I give you: The gender nonconformity! I am proud to be a trans geologist, and I celebrate each and every one of my queer peers. Happy pride!

A stratigraphic chart showing sedimentary layers in the pink, white, and blue colors of the trans flag. Beneath them is a drawing of an igneous intrusion with the yellow, white, purple, and black colors of the nonbinary flag.

a friendly Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter from one of my pomodoro breaks from writing today at work

an index card with a watercolor and pen sketch of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The background is a magenta-to-blue gradient with a few flakes of metallic sparkle and the spacecraft is orange with blue solar arrays and a blue circular antenna.
