Harry Dean Stanton’s tropical shirt is one of the most insanely incongruous costume choices ever made for a Lovecraftian deep space horror movie. Makes me smile every time I see it.
Harry Dean's entire existence in that movie is a masterstroke.

There's a great (oddly similar) parallel to those two in the one-year-later #DoctorWho Tom Baker story Warriors' Gate.
His and Yaphet Kotto’s interaction really make the film for me. They sell the idea that these are just working stiffs dealing with office politics and generalised boredom with space travel.
"Is this clean?" [sniffs shirt] "Eh, good enough for space work."
Hes so good. Just watched Christine last night. Underused but great to see him.
