I need a Gen-Z student consultant to tell me what are the cultural references that resonate with students. I am officially out of date.
This year I've noticed many undergrads wearing music T-shirts from "back in my day", including AC/DC, Megadeath, Van Halen, etc. Maybe they are trying to resonate with us! (Trying to figure out if it reflects genuine music interest, or is a fashion trend divorced from music taste per se)
Today in my grad course I asked if students remembered when Walter Mischel published his presidential column on the “toothbrush problem.” And then I realized they must have been in elementary school. (I just checked and it was published in 2008... 🥲)
Teaching social media marketing keeps me young. Send those questions my way!
I experienced a case of live usage of "Fanum tax" last week when I witnessed a nephew holding his hand out for the change I gave to his grandfather. Does that count?
Sometimes you can get them to start watching old shows by showing clips in class! Convert the youth! But yeah I have never NOT explained the Big 5 without using Office characters as examples (there's someone who's high and someone who's low on EACH TRAIT!) but I think I'm going to have to let go 😭
