My grandma Emma went to Flandreau Indian School, where she was beaten for speaking Anishinaabemowin, her first language. She wasnā€™t allowed to go home for years at a time. Before she left us, she would scream and cry while she slept, even in her 90s.

periodic reminder that Middlebury students' protest against Charles Murray speaking was about not wanting to give asymmetric speech power to a bad academic and conservative welfare recipient laundering race science, not because of some fear of conservatism writ large

We can help make your events more accessible by providing closed captions & transcripts for pre-recorded talks ā€“ just ask @divyampersaud.comacademicaudiotranscription.com#EthicalAlternativeToAI

Quote: I can't stress enough how important and easy it is to seek out basic accessibility measures for virtual conferences. Access isnā€™t a flashy one-liner in a conference policy, it is the deliberate & right choices that you make. I have used AAT three times to transcribe & caption conference talks and they are excellent, efficient and caring!

nope! theyā€™ll have to email me! but the mention of Martin Haspelmath makes me think that we should have said ā€œnative speakerā€ is also a poor comparative concept! There could be a nice paper applying his arguments against ā€œwordā€ to ā€œnativenessā€

this paper originated from a Fall 2020 seminar, which was inspired by convos with Justin Craft & Carrie Ann Morgan; weā€™ve now published two papers & a blogpost, with much more already out and in progress that builds on the learning we all did together! very excited for this one to be out!

šŸ¤£ looks like someone didnā€™t read the paper! if you want, you can let them know that they can invite me to come present graphs on why it doesnā€™t work on ā€œempiricalā€ grounds!
