One of the handiest editing tips I ever learned, and was genuinely *stunned* to discover how effective it was, was to simply read the text out loud during the editing process. It makes you read and say every word. I catch so many dropped words, misplaced words and incorrectly-spelled words that way.

That & having the robot living inside my Word machine read it back to me in its robot voice. (My mom once told me that she used to read her high school & college papers back to herself BACKWARDS [!] to proof them, but there are limits!)

And redundant passages. Oh, the redundant passages...

I learned this tutoring and a lot of the time my comments on student papers end with "oh and read this aloud. No, I promise, it works, I know I sound crazy"

My AP English teacher was a proponent of this, and it has saved my bacon many times. She was later arrested for fraud, which isn't related to your point, but it's interesting enough to mention nevertheless.

I had a Classical Studies prof in undergrad who would have us turn in rough drafts of our papers. We'd then read them out loud to him (one-on-one meetings) to help ourselves find the issues. Stressful, but very helpful! It also helped that he was calm and supportive throughout.

I am constantly telling my first-year composition students to read their work out loud. Even better (albeit more painful) is to have someone else read it out loud to you. In addition to what you described, it also helps a lot with style/phrasing.

Realizing another way that extreme self-consciousness hampers my writing. I used to do this and I stopped. Speaking out loud as I compose also forces the words into a more constant speed instead of painfully slow dribbles punctuated by high-pressure blasts I can't hope to capture

I use the “Speak text” feature to listen to what I’ve written. It’s pretty effective.

Yep, one of my editing passes just involves reading everything aloud to my husband. It's now very obvious to me when other writers haven't read their work aloud.
