In my experience libertarianism attracts a fair number people who, for whatever reason, see others more as economic vehicles for goods and services than as free-thinking humans with rights and/or desires beyond the engine of the marketplace. This worldview dovetails quite nicely with fascism.

The core question of libertarianism is not “what do they believe” but “what are they giving themselves permission to do?”

Libertarians imagine all the bad stuff as happening to someone else; they’re always the boss, not the serf toiling for a megacorp for the right to purchase 1x protein husk bi-weekly

I think both libertarianism and fascism go well with people who think everything bad that happens to them is not their fault, they should not be thankful to no one, but everyone who complain about anything should only blame themselves Other ideologies cater to some sense of guilt or responsability

Best definition I’ve seen of a “libertarian” is “a Republican who wants to smoke weed.”

Also, generally, scratch a Libertarian and you'll find someone who thinks they are somehow smarter and more rational than everyone else and will inevitably end up on top of whatever social/political structure emerges after the current one collapses, so fuck it, why not hasten the collapse

Mmmph. That just closed the loop for me with Pratchett's sin as "thinking of people as things"

"When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they're getting worried that they won't like the truth. People as things, that's where it starts." "Oh, I'm sure there are worse crimes--" "But they starts with thinking about people as things..." Granny Weatherwax

I think you've hit on something that's key. It's money that drives most, though not quite all, libertarian "thinking."

A long time ago, I worked at a Canadian .com with a lot of young developers. They spent a lot of time say their tax dollars this private health care that … up until they had kids or parents with failing health. It turns out that private schools and cancer care are $$$

Problem with libertarianism is… if you have tons of money: you’re good… if you are poor: tough luck, you’re on your own.
