One thing I've noticed is the working musicians I know aren't haters. They have preferences, of course, but it's rare to hear "can you believe so-and-so is popular?" Many will carefully study music they dislike. Fans, on the other hand, are invariably deranged haters.
It's the scene in Vacation where they get lost in a majority Black neighborhood and Rusty asks "you think these guys know The Commodores?"
