Unsurprising to anyone with a brain, free access to books and safe people with whom to discuss those books is great for teens' emotional wellbeing and development. www.tcpress.com/blog/young-p...

I was disturbed. But then I took some time to reflect on what I'd read and, I'd like to think, it made me a better person in the end.

As I've said for years, controlling what art teens have access to is not so much about sculpting them morally as it is about a repressed libidinal desire for absolute control over them.

yeah, whenever i'm around younger folks, i always try and be as non-judgemental about this stuff as possible. i wanna be the kind of cool older dirtbag burnout metalhead that i wish i had in my life between like, 14 and 19

it’s almost like “disturbing” stories are in fact a safe way to explore new and/or disturbing topics and explore trauma in a controlled environment! WHODUTHUNKIT

the part where reading upsetting things becoming "narratives to live into" was "laughable" fucking killed me. I'm glad they looked into the data for this but it's so dumb we have to even prove this at all!the part where reading upsetting things becoming "narratives to live into" was "laughable" fucking killed me. I think the other thing with this is because books require actual work, kids tend to avoid or abandon the stories they’re not ready for. When adults say a book is forcing ideas into a kid’s head, I think they’re more terrified that the kid is ready to engage with them.

me as a middleschooler reading Lolita, and ever since then having the most annoying time online being into anime and more recently into Vtuber things, I would say people that defend 'lolis' and the like as not being pedophiliac in nature should be forced to read Lolita but idk how that would go tbh
