Lots of neighborhoods around Beirut have long-closed shops but here, the mood is different. Many shops around Place d'Etoile sit completely abandoned, ransacked, doors still wide open after years of disuse after the protests in 2019 started.

It's really ingrained here as a self-sustaining thing. Going to uni here even briefly I met quite a few Lebanese-born Arab people who could not read or write Arabic and could barely speak it. Never lived or even visited America but their parents raised them with English as the native language.

Bears reminding that there are many Christian nationalist Lebanese that for whatever reason don't see themselves as Arab, and the European racists who created the Great Replacement conspiracy theory absolutely do not consider Lebanese people exempt from that theory.
