#InsertAnInvert2024 Deep sea - Bathyal The midnight zone (1000m-4000m depth) lacks sunlight. Though many animals that live here rely on marine snow that fall from above for nutrients, there are also unexpected adaptations like deep sea sponges that snare and feed on little crustaceans. 🎨 🐡

Deep sea scene with a peculiar sponge. It has an upright stalk. At the end of the stalk, it branches outwards like a pincushion, each needle tip is adorned with big transparent bubbles, making the entire thing look like an exploded firework. The image is framed by a circular ornate carved window resembling stone carvings.
