I implore people to also see One From The Heart, Coppola’s gonzo tribute to old movie musicals that similarly bombed, with music by Tom Waits (who met his future wife and songwriting partner Kathleen Brennan during this film’s production)
Based on their similarly chaotic productions and other similarities (though ironically One From The Heart was meant as a breather project after finishing Apocalypse Now that simply went way over budget) they act as an interesting double feature
do you have a preference on the original or the reprise? Criterion Channel has both and I am intrigued.
I saw this recently! But it's...definitely odd and agonisingly 79s despite coming out in 1982. Looks great, but has a hard time deciding if it wanted to be real or big and gaudy and just ends up feeling kinda...conservative and small in the end? I might need to try it again. Also. Raul Julia!
