[Puts on his early American historian tri-corner hat] The recent ubiquity of the 1774 vintage Appeal to Heaven flag on the US right is a perfect illustration of the "I love America so much that I have to kill it" variety of ye olde treasonous patriotism that has come to define "US conservatism."

Illiberals really really love to pretend to have Liberal ideals. And unfortunately the media usually takes them at their word.

They love a version of America where only affluent white men can vote, and Black people can be owned as property. Any other version of America isn't the REAL America and doesn't count. Seen through that lens, there are no contradictions and their actions make sense.

Honestly, I would personally start comparing these people to other fundamentalist groups, and see how much it pisses them off for them to say "WELL, ACKSHUALLY-" No. It's giving fundamentalism and borderline anti-state terrorism. And there are receipts now.

The phrase "Appeal to Heaven" is a reference to this passage from Locke's Second Treatise. It refers to the justification that an individual would give for using violence against the established government. An odd position for one of the 9 supposed guardians of the Constitution to take.

And where the body of the people, or any single man, is deprived of their right, or is under the exercise of a power without right, and have no appeal on earth, then they have a liberty to appeal to heaven, whenever they judge the cause of sufficient moment. And therefore, though the people cannot be judge, so as to have, by the constitution of that society, any superior power, to determine and give effective sentence in the case; yet they have, by a law antecedent and paramount to all positive laws of men, reserved that ultimate determination to themselves which belongs to all mankind, where there lies no appeal on earth, viz. to judge, whether they have just cause to make their appeal to heaven. 19]
