I had to stop reading that Brooks piece half way through. I live in the world he describes and it bears almost no resemblance to reality. He’s mostly inventing a progressive guy to get mad at. And it’s the same straw man guy that Bill Buckley was mad at in 1951 when he wrote God and Man at Yale.
Brooks has spent an entire career as a well-paid, constantly published mediocrity, which speaks volumes about corporate media
It is so bad. He thinks by bringing up a defunct political party from a century and a half ago he's sophisticated and erudite. Instead, he's just someone who has not had to think critically to achieve his elite status he condemns, and he's not even a particularly good writer.
David Brooks hasn’t thought a new thought or adjusted his perception of reality to adjust to new developments since the 1990s. It’s remarkable that he still makes a living writing this repetitive and predictable drivel.
Is he mad at teachers who are doing sex change operations on kids in elementary schools?
His performative moderation can be annoying, but if the issues of today center around a reality where both Lasch and Kendi can be right, at the same time, about some of our present political issues then his work has something to offer.
Yeah. I had to stop at "in my weaker moments, all of it makes me want to go home and watch a bunch of Ben Shapiro videos." I'm an ex-Republican and I thought I was following his logic, even if I didn't completely agree, but he lost me at this. Who in their right mind chooses to watch Ben?
Thanks, I'll stop reading that Brooks piece before I start!
Notably there isn’t a single Democratic policy he even identifies as problematic or wrong. Not one. It is all just handwringing about the “vibes” at Ivy League universities. “Here is the actual Democratic platform and legislative agenda Mr. Brooks”. Show us on the doll where it hurt you”
Straw Democrats are the worst.
