I'd probably seen "The Maltese Falcon" 8 or 10 times on TV before I saw it on a Friday night at a packed theater on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. Even though I knew it inside-out, I had NO IDEA how funny it was. It's almost more a comedy than anything else. The wisdom of the crowd, indeed.
