I've been thinking about commentary that a certain publisher dominates the novella and novel categories in awards. To be upfront 1: I admin an award that bucks that trend and which uses a jury nomination/vote. model 2:I have a novella out from NOT that press so there are my "biases" if you will+

Often when I hear people talk about this issue they say things like: such and such isn't the only publisher! There are other people who publish novellas! Read other publishers people! Seek out new diverse publishers. And of course they're right. But being from and indie pub background +

In the U.K. at least when it comes to British fantasy @lunapress.bsky.social is very prolific and both the press and their novellas (quite rightly) often win awards. That being said the bigger awards are often a popularity contest, and/or a function of marketing spend.

FWIW I think the Ignyte model is by far the best: juried shortlist stops it *just* being a popularity contest with the same faces, and achieves the best outcome for any award ie visibility on worthy things that were getting missed. And then no barrier to entry for voting. It's brilliant.
