There are a lot of terrestrial orchids in Australia - almost all are deciduous with minimal foliage and smallish flowers. A lot of these grow in environments with poor soils / less rainfall than more tropical areas where there are more epiphytic orchids, some of which have larger leaves and flowers.

Thanks for your reply. I have just received a book on native orchids so will no doubt find more information in there to satisfy my curiosity.
