If you ever go on a durian side-quest, go southeastwards in September/October---peak durian season that might get you fruit that ripened on the tree. Beware that the fruit is literally deadly and must be bagged on the branch--every single one. They often drop and the spikes are not funny.
I think I read that elephants were the seed dispersers of durian and jackfruit. Those spikes keep elephants away until the seeds are properly matured.
