So I can finally tell you about one of the things I've been being SUPER impatient about: If you're out in the world and happen to see a magazine with the words "Time," "Special Edition," "Artificial Intelligence," & "A New Age Of Possibilities" on the cover, you uhh… might wanna give pg 28 a look 👀

Picture of a magazine with title text reading "Time Special Edition: Artificial Intelligence: A New Age Of Possibilities," an several topic headlines, all over top of an "AI"-generated image of human eyebrow and eye, and the eye has a circuit board for an iris; a fedex envelope and desk are visible beneath the magazine
Text from magazine interior, reading, "Bias in the System: AIs, like people, can absorb prejudices & exacerbate problems instead of solving them. In this Q&A, Damien P. Williams, an expert on social justice, explains the issues & what we can do to push back."
You're hiring an assistant or considering candidates for a grant, & you'd like to make the best choice possible, free of emotion or any hidden bias you might have-so you turn to AI for help. But not so fast! Generative AI, trained on the massive flow of human language & culture across the internet, has already absorbed our biases, including the unconscious ones. & while developers are working to purge racism, sexism, & disdain for the disabled from their language models, they have a lot of work ahead, especially when it comes to more nuanced forms of discrimination we cannot always perceive. In the Q&A that follows, Pamela Weintraub discusses the entrenched biases still laced through emerging AI with Damien Patrick Williams, a data scientist & philosopher at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His particular focus: How AI & algorithms affect the lived experiences of marginalized people, & how we can set things right.

Regular reminder that we need many more people taking concrete actions to defend, protect and EXPAND public libraries across the country. This includes running for library board seats where that's possible. www.librariesforthepeople.org - Join us in 2024 in this struggle.

New: multiple sources, including executives, explain why sites like Jezebel are being shut down despite being very popular. The "brand safety" industry has created a paranoid environment where companies are not prepared to run ads next to important issues. www.404media.co/advertisers-...

Advertisers Don’t Want Sites Like Jezebel to Exist
Advertisers Don’t Want Sites Like Jezebel to Exist

The 'Brand Safety' and 'Suitability' industries have financially crushed the news business by keeping ads away from articles that its 'sentiment analysis' algorithms think will make people sad or upse...

Also, it is really frustrating how much people justify not giving painkillers to women. I recently had an IUD put in, and even though I had taken four ibuprofen beforehand as my obgyn recommended, it was so incredibly uncomfortable that I came home and told my partner that I am never giving birth.
