Silent Hill 2 is a classic, but i think i kind of prefer the stand-alone story and atmosphere of the very first game the best. A really wretched and evil vibe that they never hit on in that exact way ever again. The otherworld segments in SH1 are truly some of the scariest shit ever.

I feel like Silent Hill 1 is so perfectly wrapped up in its release era that it could never be properly remade. The vague details of the PS1-era graphics give you just enough to make your mind try to fill in the gaps. Increasing visual fidelity would pretty much be changing the story 😆 PERFECT GAME!

This game blew my mind when it came out. It's so unpleasant. There's not even any comfort in the soundtrack which is mostly just banging and grinding sounds, horrible whistles and sirens. SH2 is so chill in comparison.

Even the odd little goofy translation bits sometimes add to the atmosphere. It feels forgotten and obscure, despite being extremely famous.

I've a fond memory of my uncle playing this --just after it released-- on his PS1 which he had recently hooked up to a sound system. I was spellbound watching (and hearing) it being played.

1 was a new vibe that never has quite been replicated since, and 3 was a brilliant follow-up

I remember the first time going into the school, trying to go to the second floor, and stopping dead for 15 minutes because I could hear what I thought was a boss creature waiting for me. Turned out to be the fucking MUSIC. (Devil's Lyric for those wondering.) Been a hardcore fan ever since.
