I used to think it was no big deal that my postdoc research on climate at Princeton was funded by BP, but now I see it as BP's effort to burnish its reputation and influence research. On balance, taking fossil fuel funding is a net negative and this kind of research should be government funded.

The two friends, both climate researchers, recently spent hours confronting the choices that will shape their careers, and the world. Their ideas are very different.

the journalistic failures surrounding Iraq were so vast and numerous that it felt hard to diagnose, but after Gaza it feels simpler. the institution is distinctly racist towards Arabs and Muslims - not in some abstract structural way but in the sense that NYT leadership views them as inferior

Many thanks to the folks at WA DNR for their insights for this story. Climate change is leading to longer wildfire seasons which need (sometimes difficult) changes to the fire workforce. @bulletinatomic.bsky.socialthebulletin.org/2024/02/clim...

Climate change is making wildfire seasons longer and the seasonal workforce used for fire management is understaffed and overstressed. But switching from a temporary/part-time to year-round workforce isn't going to be simple. Great report by @smallthoughts.bsky.socialthebulletin.org/2024/02/clim...

Climate change brings more work, more risk for wildfire workers

Longer fire seasons are upending the systems that federal and state agencies use to manage and contain wildland fires.

I used to work in pet insurance as a survival job and once had to explain to a man that getting his pets spayed/neutered doesn't make his animals trans. This is what happens when EVERYTHING gets turned into a political issue. People lose their damn minds and ignore actual threats like rabies.

These stories never tell you what is actually happening, which is emphatically NOT that humanities are disappearing from higher ed, but rather that public ed is being converted into vocational training for a working class while elite private universities for the rich will remain universities.

Can Humanities Survive the Budget Cuts?

After years of hand-wringing about their future, liberal arts departments now face the chopping block. At risk: French, German, American studies and women’s studies.
