Any tips for people who feel burnout brewing? Iā€™m frustrated at lack of momentum, and backwards turns in public sector design- but so attached to the problem, and Iā€™m convinced thereā€™s enough smart and kind folk to do it. But starting to massively doubt myself, am I doing this all wrong?

Something something Ai, something something innovation, something something bullshit.

Iā€™m often asked ā€œwhat is a service?ā€, in my experience, as bad faith way to strangle conversations about cross-product/ dept. join up. Having something to point to & say services can be transactional permissions but *also* span years & be relational- particularly within welfare or health provision.

Layers of agents doing tasks no one wants to do is like a Kafka-esque bureaucratic nightmare. It offers almost no incentive to design away bad processes, but to hide them, creating unlimited "make work" that exhausts planetary resources, the only feature being that they're making someone money...

First fire of the year. Right hibernation has started, see you sometime in March.

Fireplace with glowing fire- Mantle has lots of different size candles on and a poster saying ā€˜dear Gateshead you are annoying and I donā€™t want to hang out with you anymore, sincerely Newcastleā€™.

Having spent the last few weeks kneedeep in a project that looks at the links between public technologies and productivity, I think the hill I will die on is that -- if anything is going to unlock people's time and ability to do more things -- it is *service design*, particularly for onboarding

Just like diet pills, the lure of quick fixes doesnā€™t actually fix root cause problems. Technology is an enabler - but most systemic solutions come from human and community connection - that takes hard graft. Current Ai obsession in welfare provision is like diet pills whilst quaffing Big Macs.
