The thing about hispanics/latinos is that a lot of them are white (both in the "always were" and the "definition of white is always expanding" senses) and are 3rd generation+ at this stage. So their politics coming to resemble standard "white" politics is not really surprising.
This Irishman is nodding along. Some in my family remember the past and some of them are eager to forget it.
Do they think white people think they’re white? As a “white” Jew I have news for them. The reason Irish and Italian ancestry is now accepted is because neither continues to immigrate to the U.S. in large numbers. As long as there is significant Hispanic/Latin immigration, they will be “others.”
Wasn't the Hispanic label and associated collective representation driven pretty heavily via glances at the civil rights movement, and importantly, Univision? So it kinda always functioned in a unique manner, but was happily unquestioned by the white mainstream.
Hispanics think of themselves that way. Most of white America doesn’t
Or they’re descendants of wealthy Cubans like Rubio
Nobody asks why Americans with Irish and Italian heritage vote like Anglo-Americans at this stage.
It’s not as if there’s been a dearth of authoritarian governments in post-colonial South & Central America either
