We're four days into the most significant natural disaster in the recorded history of our region. Our community is experiencing an ongoing crisis created by infrastructural collapse and the profound failure of capitalism to value and sustain life. 1/?

A photo of Firestorm Books' front door. Cardboard signs taped to the glass read: "Info & Resource Sharing, Daily 12-4. Please do not leave donations outside of this time frame. Community meetings @ 2pm around back in parking lot area. Community Board: Share info, requests, resources, etc." Inside the building piles of supplies are visible.

Imagine looking around the landscape of higher ed, at the conditions that are shaping our ability to teach honestly and our students' ability to learn meaningfully, and saying "you know what? We should reduce the number of student accommodations." I mean, what the fuck /8

At lastā€¦Anotherā€™s heartbeat
by Marcellus Williams who was murdered by the state of Missouri on September 24, 2024

the silhouettes of their bond visible at the last glow of the sun
they experience each other and the life of the night as it begins to stir
standing there in silence holding hands
no rush to go back inside
there is so much beauty and comfort in being in love and just beingā€¦
ā€”amidst sounds of buzzing
chirps
crickets
the pleasant but irregular blowing of the wind
fireflies dancing in step with the light of the moon
how strange it is to become aware of anotherā€™s heartbeat but forget oneā€™s ownā€”
finally love

It's currently Banned Books Week and I'd love to use this moment to remind you that book bans aren't about the books. They're about silencing marginalized people (and creating the permission structure for their harm) and defunding institutions of public learning.
