Well, the latest strains are no longer lethal-- at least, not immediately so. But there are still strains that'll knock you on your ass, and possibly leave subtle long term damage. It's still worth being careful.

It's like the cold in some ways, e.g., it spreads easily, people are infectious for extended periods, and people love to go out in public while infected. But in terms of health effects, it's a lot worse.
