the standard "shit hits the fan" scenario appears to be basically extremely racist suburbanites playing a tower defense game in their cul-de-sac as the "hordes" of city-dwellers attempt to invade their mcmansion, for inadequately explored reasons. these guys generally don't get out much.

Like the time Pink Polo Guy tried to turn getting caught training a gun on a parade into a whole ass Senate seat

"What's that rumbling sound?"

They seem to think it's an opportunity to prove how badass they are and take the world back, when really it's nothing to actively lust for. What they really lust for is a return to unquestioned power. And from there it's easy to see how fash they get.

I think the fantasy boils down to filling in the gaps of "I get to kill people I dislike (especially minorities/people living in cities) and everyone agrees it was a good thing, and I also can do what I want while being a tormented suffering hero."

Billionaires fretting about how they’ll keep their private security loyal is hilarious to me

Someone posted a short story about a post-apocalyptic scenario set in a city where people just end up working together to get along — don’t remember who it was but it was shared on here so some time in the last year. Need more fiction like that

Having dipped my toes in prepper content, there's nominally a fear that people will raid homes for food and supplies. That itself can cause some weird paranoia like hiding the fact that you buy bottled water from your neighbors, or being ready to kill your own dog if SHTF and it's too noisy.

I know the gun hoarding race war dreamers on my street, and I stopped being scared of them when I realized they’re all too comfortable to ever start any shit. A fifth wheel and a brand new F250 is as close as they’ll ever get to “roughing it”

If the guy down the street from me declared a race war then bunkered in his house I think I'd just ignore them until they ran out of MREs and had to go to the grocery store.

It’s also always funny that they assume gasoline and diesel supply chains will remain stable and consistent in their imagined self-caused apocalypse. For people constantly fantasizing about causing war zone conditions, they sure aren’t ready for a single life change.
