I swear this happens every election; at least since I started voting (1988). Sometimes it's the locals who don't want students voting on local issues.

Reminds me of the text I (and several thousand others) received on the day of the vote in Kansas on abortion rights. It urged me to "Vote YES" to protect abortion rights, when in fact that would have done the opposite.
I wouldn't be surprised if the culprits were spoofing phone numbers. That's what happened on a Canadian federal campaign I was official agent for, back in 2008. It was unpleasant knowing that someone was framing me to possibly go to prison. And also they rolled out more suppression in 2011.
