I would have been earlier, but I had to wait for someone to "invite" me. Remember when that was a thing? Bluesky now has over 10 million users, and I was #710,572!

What is common knowledge in your field, but shocks outsiders? That academics don’t get paid for most of what we write, or review, or edit, but our universities do have to pay for us to read it

Ultimately, this came down to values. I say now what I have said this whole campaign: I am a parasite and I do not have the country’s best interests at heart. So it is clear to me now that I have no choice but to drop out of the race and support Donald Trump. wapo.st/4cGm2QP

There clearly is only one logical home for me in the 2024 election. I did not want to say so earlier for fear of alienating my host.

I'm starting to think the brain worm is not on our side.

Excellent news: updated COVID vaccines, targeting the KP.2 variant that has been responsible for much of the summer surge, are expected to be approved late next week and likely available to consumers before Labor Day.

The arrival of updated Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines for the KP.2 variant comes well into a summer wave when Americans have struggled to find an existing shot.

At this instant 79 years ago (8:15am August 6, local time), Little Boy—a 15-kiloton, uranium-fueled atomic bomb—destroyed Hiroshima, killing (per US military estimates) ~70,000 men, women, and children, including 12 American POWs. Independent estimates later maintained ~140,000 people were killed.

A color photograph of a damaged wristwatch in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, its hands frozen at 8:15am.
A photograph of a shadow of a person living in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, who was vaporized while climbing the steps of a building while using a cane, leaving behind only their shadow imprinted on the steps (because their body momentarily blocked the light from the intense thermal flash, burning away everything on the steps that was not in shadow).
A color photograph of a damaged and partially melted children’s tricycle in the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum. On the morning of August 6, 1945, Shinichi Tetsutani, who was one month shy of turning four years old, was riding this tricycle, playing with his best friend, a girl named Kimi, 1,500 meters away from where the Little Boy atomic bomb exploded overhead. When found in the wrecked of his house, he was still grasping the red handlebar grip from his tricycle. Severely injured and burned all over his body, calling out, “Water, I want water,” he died that night. Shinichi’s father buried him in the backyard with his favorite toy, and his best friend Kimi, so he could ride it and play even after death. Forty years later, in 1985, Shinichi’s father, Nobuo, decided to rebury his son in the family’s gravesite. Unearthing the backyard grave with Kimi’s mother, Nobuo rediscovered the tricycle and donated it to the museum.
A black and white photograph of one of the victims of the Little Boy atomic bomb lying on a mat on the floor. It is unclear whether the victim is a man or a woman because most of the skin on the face has been horribly burned and melted, as have the eyes.
