Indeed. Normally (out of conf season) we just get the minister who drew the short straw being quizzed on whatever the issue of the day is (which is invariably not their brief) and then listeners/viewers being frustrated when all they do is toe the party line. /1
We need to get back to longer format interviews with politicians. 45-60 minutes no flashy gimmicks, no post interview waffle just interviewer/interviewee discussing a range of subjects and leave it to us to decide if we like what we hear.

I think the Red Historian would be a great asset on here. Perhaps Prof Tim Bale could have a word with his colleague to tell him how much better than the other place this is.
A lot of 'debate' on TV and radio takes this form. Recall a piece about this in the FT by Evan Davis several years ago.
