My own contribution to the George Smith volume is on John Herschel. I trace Herschel's concept of residual phenomena back to work he was doing on physical astronomy, in particular an article he wrote in 1823 for the Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...

I'll also give a talk on "Measurement and Representation in Seismology" later that day in the session on Geo-philosophy. I think it would be of interest not just for people in philosophy of the geosciences but also for people working on models and measurement.
