My dad had a book or two from the _original_ minstrels, choral groups of formerly enslaved people raising consciousness for & also raising funds for abolition & black colleges. The part I don't get is how they got _so_ quickly & thoroughly replaced by blackface minstrelsy.

I have somewhere I collection of magnets that are old advertisements of products using Sambo and Mammy type figures. They even sexualized Black toddlers. Fucking bizarre.

saeed may i ask what you would do when you run across “artifacts” like this out there in thrift stores? i’ve brought things to the counter and asked that the manager not sell offensive racial stereotypes, etc (native american stuff is also wild here) like mammy salt and pepper shakers etc.
