Ofc you all know that the Spanish claimed Florida early on, and that settlements of Europeans, first Spanish and then English, from the Caribbean were maintained throughout the colonial period. Remember Dido Belle? Her mother seems to have been pensioned in FL.
The Florida real-estate boom was memorably satirized in the Marx Brothers’ first movie, “The Cocoanuts” (sic) in 1929. “You can have any kind of a home you want to, you can even get stucco! Oh, how you can get stuck-O!”
Followed because of this. It is exactly the sort of detail I wanted to include, but didn't have, when I made a thread recently.
