I grew up in the finger lakes area of NY. Quicksand was always the excuse to keep us kids from wandering too far when we were around water, and the lie worked.

I lived in Florida so it should have been the alligators that lived in the swamp down the street but we were very nonchalant about feeding deadly reptiles marshmallows while keeping a keen eye out for quicksand.
