as a writer talking to fellow writers, if a mag is going to ding you for a generic salutation, that is prob a place you don't want to work with. if they vent on social media and take public potshots at their hopeful submitters over it though, run
I second this.
Unless there's a name listed, I tend to just start submissions with 'Hi' - this seems to be a very weird thing to take issue with lol
I just say Good morning/afternoon/evening.
Yuppppp
I sometimes got grumpy about authors who would address their cover letters to ONLY my husband, as though he and I were not co-editors. But that was definitely the misogyn-audacity that made me grumpy.
If the name of the publication is correct, “Dear Editors” is fine with us.
Oh my god did someone do that?
If I address by name, it is often Dear Editor LastName and Team... Then I include all the readers and avoid any risk of misgendering. I figure if Professor can be used for address, so can Editor. And 100 percent agree on avoiding.
They all have different rules. Some make it impossible to find the masthead. And, worst of all, some reject with “ Dear Writer…”. So don’t lose any sleep. The pros will be pros.
wtf? My cover letters are generally just hi/hello because “dear slush readers” is silly and calling an editor by their name feels a little presumptuous. They likely aren’t going to see it
