Beautifully put. I'm a Tadej believer. I saw him in the flesh at Milano-San Remo, where he was beaten, but just as happy as if he'd won. But boy your words "the more unbelievable it becomes, the more desperately we need to believe in it" also give me the shivers.
Thanks, yes good point. Though Mike's article explains it better than I can here (and it's a free link, not paywalled). But big part of it is 'dont let them outside', which many owners would understandably bristle at. That's why I'd like to see more work done. Bells no good - so what *would* work?
If it sounds like I'm anti-cat, I'm not. Some of my best friends are cats. But we have to address responsible ownership in a biodiversity crisis. Mike Grindle was great on this for The New Climate last year: medium.com/the-new-clim...
Are our cats an environmental disaster? And what can we do about it?
That's so well put, thanks Gill. Everything has a downside. The importance is to weigh up those downside risks - and if there's a huge disparity (like this one) then we have a path to follow. For now at least.
The RSPB used to always object to wind farms in Scotland back in the day, so early 2000s onwards. Then they stopped (2010 ish) because they understood the biggest threat to birds was the climate crisis. Which is absolutely the right approach
Also there are people working hard on solutions. See: group.vattenfall.com/press-and-me... I'd love to see harder work/science on stopping domestic cats from exterminating wildlife.
The province of Groningen in the Netherlands and energy company RWE are investigating whether painting a wind turbine blade black will help reduce the number of bird victims. This is done in collabora...
Ha, glad I checked! That's good to know about actually, I'll check out that feed. Cheers.
