This take popped up not too long ago and is one of those things that is so wrong on so many different axes that I feel compelled to respond to it. Although for the sake of time, I'll only respond to the idea that AI is somehow leveling the playing field for cover art.
Actually , no I was not trying to troll. We got to the core issue: I don't think using the cited models to make a profit is ethical because we cannot be sure the original artist's consent was given. And it sounds like making a profit via AI/ML is ethical in y'all view.
I know I'm in the US where there are laws about how it is raised and how it should or shouldn't be handled. And I can almost guarantee that before those laws were in place, things were not ethical--or at least certainly worse than they are now. And we are in that same pre-law time now with this.
If the artists agreed and consented to a payment of $1 or $0.01, then it's at least fine. Then there is consent (and most likely a contract for use). And she's understands how important contracts are because she's told tales of how she got her's modified in the past with other fandom publications.
