I know I'm in the US where there are laws about how it is raised and how it should or shouldn't be handled. And I can almost guarantee that before those laws were in place, things were not ethical--or at least certainly worse than they are now. And we are in that same pre-law time now with this.

So it was unethical to eat meat in the past, but it’s ethical now, because there are more laws? Also, many people think it’s STILL unethical to eat meat, and they have a point. I don’t agree with their conclusion, but they do have a point.
