The thing is...Trump has succeeded in the past by leaning in to each transgressive-to-grotesque thing he says. He's gotten by as folks in the media have normalized Trump's extremism as Trump-being-Trump. Now is (or at least feels) different. The hate, and hence the emperor, is naked.
And other Republicans are leaning into it! I've seen Laura Loomer and Lauren Boebert tweets. Keep it going, kids! Get that racism out there! One of the things that neutralizes the hate is Harris's obvious delight in being alive.
As I recall he lost the election in 2020 and was convicted of 34 felony counts by "leaning in." Call that "success" if you really feel the need, I suppose.
