As we have seen in every single natural disaster in the US we survive by helping each other. Every damn time. EVERY DAMN TIME Bunker bros and LMOE crap is nonsense.

Whenever someone talks about people looting wildly during disasters and all of that nonsense, I always think it says way more about them specifically then it does about humanity in general.

Also People WANT to help. We do. It's kinda a thing in our species. We're a species who'll send 50 people up a mountain to find one dumbass who shouldn't have been there, risking all that to help. We suck at a lot of things, but ... this we do.

I love this post. It has the benefit of being optimistic and also true. In virtually all cases of disaster, there is always more people looking to help and build community. But an endless stream of trashy post-apocalyptic fetishism has entrenched the idea that we’re all monsters.

LMOE? But yes to the sentiment in general. Cory Doctorow’s done a bunch of good fiction about this, most recently “The Lost Cause”.

Behind the Bastards taught me the term "Elite Panic" where people in power, the media and the rich all assume despite all evidence from every disaster ever, the situation is going to turn into mass violence and looting and that there needs to be hardcore authority first and foremost in the area.

And more often than not, when everything goes to shit it's because of elite panic fucking things up when survivors had already organized themselves into a really effective system.

I find it really funny when bunker-survivalist types buy those expensive buckets of toxic slop to try and survive the apocalypse when MREs are way cheaper, taste better, last longer, and contain actual nutritional value.
