Fun Fact: Teslas have killed over twice as many people as the exploding Ford Pinto did at a roughly similar level of sales. the Pinto sold ~3 million units & killed at least 27 people. Tesla is now creeping up on 5 million total vehicles & 95 deaths from battery fires or autopilot crashes.
Tesla deaths from fires and Autopilot make up 24% of the fatalities in crashes. Learn about the death rates per million miles and vs other cars.
another fun fact is he tried to assassinate a whistleblower via elaborate swatting attempt who was trying to blow the whistle on the batteries, say they were at risk of "thermal runaway meltdown"
Teslas have a high prevalence of critical safety defects, but fwiw the Pinto was no less safe than comparable vehicles of the ‘70s. It was recalled due to political pressure stemming from faulty analysis published in an investigative journalism piece published in Mother Jones.
my parents had some friends who died after crashing their tesla into a tree while speeding. haven't looked into it so idk if it was ever investigated more but apparently people who knew them said doing something that reckless was way ooc for them so i can't help but wonder if it was the car's fault
Why are people still buying these? I know the chances are low but like… I just can’t imagine any of the pros of the car outweigh this sort of con. Driving is dangerous enough as it is
Thelma and Louise drove a Tesla.
I would be interested to see how the stats for April 2024 shake out since they gave everyone a free month of full self driving.
I was just wondering how the Tesla stacked up to the Pinto
I like how the "well actually" dudes taking issue with your stats are completely missing your fucking point. "The Tesla isn't actually quite as dangerous as the Pinto" is still pretty damning. Even "the Tesla is 1/4 as dangerous as the Pinto" is real, real bad.
that's just what's counted too, death toll is probably significantly higher than that for teslas
